The Beginning
of the
Suicidal V-Dubbers

The planning of the club started in 2007, but to really appreciate what we have created I would like to share the events and people that inspired me to start one of the most important things in my life, The Suicidal V-Dubbers.
My passion for these rad vehicles started way, way back in history. The year was 1985, I was 3 years old. My grandfather, better known as "Bump", rebuilt and customized a Manx style VW buggy. I remember that day like it was yesterday. It was loud, being only 3 it was a little scary at first. He pulled up revving that 2100 cc engine. He walked over to me and said, "Well Butch, what ya think"? My immediate response was, "Bump, thats one uggy buggy". Our family has always had a good laugh over that til this day. He actually named it the Uggy Buggy. I remember sitting in it while it was in the garage pretending to drive it. I can still remember the smell. All you VW lovers know what smell I am talking about!! That VW gas and oil smell. That buggy was eventually sold and out of the family. Now, being in Southern California was amazing because the VW scene down there is so big. I remember going to the beach and seeing all the amazing VW's. When I was 12 or so we moved to Colorado. One of the first things I noticed was a lack of VWs. Part of that was because the scene is not as big out here and also I was getting a little older and I was focusing my attention to girls and hockey lol. I will fast forward here to where VWs came back into my life.
Early in 2007 I made the decision I wanted to get my first VW. I talked it over with my finance manager (my wife) and she decided that it would be a good idea. After searching the Samba and Craigslist I finally found the Dub I wanted. We drove up to Castle Rock to test drive it. As soon as I got in it I was greeted with that fimiliar VW smell. I was hooked. I handed over the cash and became the proud owner of a 65 Bug.
As soon as we got the Bug we were ready to cruise. Our first event that we went to was Busses at the Brewery. We were a little nervous since we had a Bug, we really didnt know what to expect. We were greeted by a very nice couple with a beautiful bus. They became our first VW friends. They are members of a VW club called Pikes Peak Volkswagen Club. I was really excited and joined immediately. After about a month of being a member I started to re-think my membership. Nothing against them I just wanted more out of a club. I got burnt out on hanging out at the Grocery Warehouse parking lot. Now none of this is an insult to their club or anyone in it, I just simply wanted more. I never regret joining those guys because I met some really great people that I still talk to this day. I told my wife that I wanted to start my own club. I really started to put my passion of VWs and my desire to have a real amazing and special club to action. I kicked the idea around with my family, sharing my ideas of how I visioned the club. Luckily for me I have a very supportive and loving family. In the meantime, I brought my mom's husband to the darkside. He was into American muscle and I got him into German sophistication LOL!! We found a nice 69 Squareback in Denver. From that point on things got really serious. I got with my tattoo guy to help with the logo and hooked up with a great screenprint shop and starting making our gear. I take pride in our old school approach with the club which is why it was an easy decision to have our club plaques made the old school way. They are poured not laser cut.
Once we got the gear, we needed members. This was going to be the fun part, but also the most challenging. As I learned from being in PPVWC that not all car clubs are for everyone. I knew what I wanted from a club but I honestly didnt know if there was anyone else like me, wanting something a little more. I wanted a car club that was more than a club. I wanted members that would be loyal and care about this club as much as me. So the search began. We did most of our recruiting at car shows. Our shirts and name really got a lot of attention which was no accident LOL! We have a wonderful group and I am proud to call each member my friend, my family. I look forward to growing our club and adding to that family.
I hope you have enjoyed hearing about the making of Suicidal V-Dubbers as much as each and everyone of us have enjoyed making it.
